Board of Directors

The MCPEI Board of Directors is composed of seven elected members of the Abegweit Band Council and the Lennox Island Band Council. Our Board of Directors ensures that MCPEI is continually advancing Aboriginal and treaty rights for the two First Nations of PEI. Their strategic counsel supports MCPEI management in effective organizational planning, sound financial management and fulfilling our vision and mandate.

Chief Matilda Ramjattan, Co-Chair

Chief Matilda Ramjattan was first elected Chief of Lennox Island First Nation in April of 2013. She holds a degree in Business Management, with an emphasis on Computers from Lexington, Nebraska, USA.  Chief Matilda has specialized training in Emergency Management and experiencing working with the fields of Health and Mental Health. Chief Matilda is also an extrepreneur.

Chief Brian Francis, Co-Chair

Chief Brian Francis was elected Chief of the Abegweit First Nation in August 2007.

After receiving his early education in Lennox Island and Summerside, he completed four years of apprenticeship training and became a journeyman carpenter. He was the first Aboriginal person in PEI to receive his inter-provincial red seal trade certificate. His career includes work within the fields of Education and Employment; as well as extensive experience in the Federal Public Service.

Chief Francis is a strong advocate for continuing education and advanced learning.

Executive Director

Donald K. MacKenzie, Executive Director

Don MacKenzie was born and raised in Charlottetown. He graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in biology and obtained his law degree from Dalhousie University. He practiced law at the Charlottetown firm of Foster Hennessey MacKenzie for 15 years, during which time he worked on many files related to the Mi’kmaq community, including on behalf of both the Lennox Island and Abegweit First Nations. He joined the Confederacy in 2006 as its Legal/Band Government Advisor, assumed the role of Director of Intergovernmental Affairs the following year and was appointed Executive Director by the MCPEI Board of Directors in January 2014. Don assumes responsibility for general oversight of the organization, as well as continues to undertake the roles of legal advisor and lead negotiator on Aboriginal and treaty rights matters.
